A solicitor or barrister with a minimum of two years post qualifying experience is required in Edinburgh or Dundee for a leading UK Charity to provide a specialist legal casework service in Housing Law.

Main Responsibilities

Manage a caseload of referrals from internal and external advice staff and solicitors within a designated procedure and to ensure this work meets quality standards.

Carry out follow-up casework and litigation including research.

Meet work in progress and billing targets set by the management team.

Keep informed and up-to-date of changes in legislation, case law and other areas.

Provide casework support to advisers through provision of advice line service.

Work with the Principal Solicitor and other solicitors in developing the Scottish Housing Law Service.

Carry out other tasks as agreed with the Principal Solicitor.

Provide internal information and training on issues of procedure, housing law and other specified area(s) of social welfare law, primarily for staff of the charity.

Assist the Principal Solicitor in assessing the training needs of staff and ensuring that these are met.

Ensure all work meets both external and internal Quality Standards.

Support the charity’s legal team as required.

Experience Required

Practice experience of running community care / welfare benefits / debt cases.

Substantial experience of handling a wide range of housing cases (public and private sector) on issues including homelessness, security of tenure and possession proceedings.

Preferably with experience of handling a range of community care / welfare benefit / debt cases.

A sound knowledge of legal aid (publicly funded) work including legal representation and legal help.
