The purpose of the role is to perform end-to-end solution design on client servicing projects, including user interface, technical interface and application design. 

The solution designer will lead the design activity across the end-to-end software development lifecycle for one or more applications on any particular project, including contact centre desktop apps, fraud detection systems, and private banker desktop apps. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical consultancy for new initiatives, to assist in the definition of business solutions or technical strategies

  • Produce Technical Feasibility Studies (TFS) and High Level Designs (HLD)

  • Provide estimates for, and review estimates for, solution development

  • Solve unique and complex technical problems with broad impact on the business unit as a whole

  • Provide full and detailed analysis, insightful commentary and recommendations for technical action as appropriate

  • Develop an in-depth awareness of new tools, processes and technical developments relevant to component area of expertise, and seek opportunities to apply them.

  • Work with technology architects on the definition of product strategy and roadmaps.

  • Collaborate with business analysts and developers to turn business requirements into solution designs that meet the business needs while aligning with our technical strategy for each application

  • Present complex technical ideas (both written and verbal), anticipate potential objections and persuade others to adopt the most appropriate view

  • Establish clear non-functional requirements (e.g. capacity, availability, response times, etc.)

  • Ensure that all requirements are 'testable' and input to the project test strategy alongside the test lead

  • Understand technical constraints of live environment / architecture, building this into solution design

  • Produce end-to-end system designs, engaging, directing and collaborating with other internal and supplier teams as required.

  • Understand the various phases of the software development lifecycle.

  • Undertake impact assessment of change requests against applications / products for client servicing applications

  • Review component designs to ensure compatibility with the end-to-end system design

  • Review test strategies to guarantee the quality of the delivered system and assist in the diagnosis of system problems encountered during testing

  • Collaborate with other component design and build teams, ensuring that end-to-end system design is followed

  • Ensure that technical quality standards are met, taking remedial action where there are quality shortfalls

  • Ensure that application monitoring and alerting is included in all system design

  • Complete technically-complex assignment work to budget, time and quality requirements. Document all work in accordance with agreed standards, and with re-use in mind

  • Where system development is part of a wider set of interdependent systems changes, collaborate with the Systems Designers from the other areas to ensure end-to-end technical integrity of the development, leading this collaboration when required

  • Participate in technical implementation planning, ensuring that the integrity of live operations will be maintained

  • Support the handover of the system into business-as-usual (BAU) operation, providing the relevant IT service teams with information and education relating to the system technology and function

  • Senior stakeholder communication and relationship management, up to Director level

  • Working closely with vendor representatives, both technical experts and product managers

  • Leadership and coaching of other technology team members

  • Working closely with the project manager and product owner to ensure project time, quality and scope requirements are met

  • Actively participating in our agile delivery approach, engaging in sprint planning, backlog refinement and daily scrums as required

    Key Skills and requirements include:

  • Demonstrable experience in a Solution Designer role with strong evidence of end-to-end delivery

  • Experience of working in an agile project team

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Strong evidence of stakeholder management at all levels

  • Strong evidence of design techniques covering all phases of the project lifecycle, both Agile and Waterfall

  • Demonstrable knowledge of accessible design and Human Computer Interaction design

  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of telephony platforms and telephony application programming interfaces

  • Demonstrable knowledge of computer networking

  • Demonstrable knowledge of Information Security, Cybersecurity risk and secure system design

  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of UK and EU legislation as it applies to software solution design

  • Experience and knowledge of voice biometrics technologies

  • Experience and knowledge of speech recognition technologies

  • Knowledge of big data analytics

  • Experience of transactional fraud detection technology

  • Experience of client servicing desktop applications

  • Proven relationship management with 3rd party vendors

  • Awareness of leading edge tools, techniques and services within IT project delivery and software development

  • Strong experience and understanding of Service Oriented Architecture

    Experience of at least 4 of the following technologies:

  • Java / J2EE (7 or above)

  • .Net 4.0 or above

  • Databases (Oracle, SQL Server, Cassandra, MongoDB)

  • Service Orientated Architecture

  • Micro Services

  • Cloud (AWS, PaaS)

  • Telephony platforms (including contact centre platforms)

    Desirable skills, qualifications, knowledge and experience:

  • Degree or equivalent in an IT related discipline

  • Experience in Financial Services

  • Experience of delivering solution design in a Client Servicing and/or Service Centre environment

  • Experience of Jira and Confluence tools
