These legally qualified positions offer a rare opportunity to work closely with the most senior members of the judiciary in Scotland. There are two positions available, one Law Clerk to the Lord President and one Law Clerk to the Lord Justice Clerk. Candidates will be considered for both positions automatically.

You will assist the Lord President or the Lord Justice Clerk, as appropriate, in the performance of their judicial functions, including assisting in the preparation of appeals, noting arguments presented in court and preparing draft text suitable for possible inclusion in the Opinions of the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary. You will also carry out legal research and prepare other papers as required.

You will have an interest in the academic side of law, be an excellent communicator, be able to assimilate complex information and have the ability to make detailed and accurate notes.

As a minimum, you will have a 2:1 law degree or equivalent, and must be a qualified Advocate or Solicitor with some experience in practice or have relevant equivalent skills/experience gained within an employment capacity.  It is anticipated that you will have significant first-hand experience of litigation in the courts, and you will have a good understanding of the most common procedures in the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary.

Applicants will be required to complete a written exercise if they are successful in passing stage one of the recruitment process, details of which will be forwarded to candidates in due course. It will be necessary to pass the written exercise in order to be selected for interview.
